Crackdown on Illegal Truck Drivers in the U.S.

With growing attention to the trucking sector, authorities at both federal and state levels are intensifying efforts to tackle illegal trucking operations, mainly due to road safety and national security issues.

Recently, Texas law enforcement arrested thirty-one illegal truck drivers in a single operation. This information came from the office of Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

Governor Abbott remarked that “when illegal immigrants break the law and drive illegally on our roads, they endanger the lives of countless Texans and Americans.”

The operation, which took place on November 11 in Wheeler County along Interstate 40, involved several agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Homeland Security Investigations, as reported by the governor’s office.

During the operation, officers checked 105 vehicles to find suspicious commercial driver’s licenses. The Department of Public Safety referred 31 individuals to ICE since they couldn’t confirm their legal status in the U.S. despite presenting commercial driver’s licenses.

According to the governor’s office, all those arrested were found to have entered the country illegally, with most of their licenses issued in California and none originating from Texas.

Abbott emphasized, “Millions of Texans drive on our highways, roads, and city streets every day. When illegal immigrants break the law and drive illegally, they put everyone at risk.”

In a similar initiative, Oklahoma’s Governor Kevin Stitt, also a Republican, has started a campaign to remove illegal truck drivers from local roads.

This initiative mirrors Operation Guardian, which took place on Interstate 40 earlier in November and has led to more than 100 illegal truck driver arrests. Marcos Charles, ICE’s associate director for removal operations, shared concerns about drivers’ abilities, noting that many cannot even read basic English—creating significant risks on the road.

In the ongoing discussions, there’s a contrast highlighted between states. While some, like California, grant driver’s licenses to undocumented individuals, Texas is striving to enhance road safety by collaborating with federal authorities to arrest illegal immigrants.
