Texas Arrests Four Tren de Aragua Gang Members Crossing U.S. Border from Mexico

Texas Department of Public Safety officers arrested four people identified as Torren de Aragua gang members who illegally crossed the border from Mexico. The four Venezuelan gang members traveled to the United States on New Year's Eve as part of a group of 22 immigrants from four countries.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the arrests Friday, saying, “Earlier this week, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers identified four violent TdA gang members who attempted to illegally cross the border from Mexico into the state. He was arrested,'' he said.

On New Year's Eve, DPS units assigned to the governor's Operation Lone Star border patrol encountered a group of 22 immigrants who illegally crossed the border from Mexico into Texas, according to a report from the governor's office. The migrants were identified as citizens of Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.

Officers arrested 11 of the migrants on suspicion of trespassing and handed over the remaining family units to Border Patrol agents. While processing the arrested migrants, police confirmed that nine of the migrants were Venezuelan nationals.

DPS special agents investigated the migrants and determined that four of the men were members of an extremely violent Venezuelan gang.

“Confirmed TdA gang members arrested on New Year's Eve include Segundo Ocando-Mejia, 39 years old; Pedro Luis Salazar-Cuervo, 27 years old; Antonio Joe Urrutia-Rojas, 18 years old; “Ocando Mejia had a tattoo on his shoulder indicating that he may have status or leadership within the gang,” the official reported.

“I have designated TdA as a foreign terrorist organization and will not tolerate this gang operating in or gaining a foothold in Texas,” Abbott said. “Until President Trump returns to the White House to secure our border, Texas will continue to hunt down dangerous criminals like TdA and keep them behind bars to protect Texans from this violent gang.”
