Texas arson suspect charged with making threats during Charlie Kirk vigil

Arson Incident at El Paso Church Linked to Hateful Messages

A woman has been accused of starting a fire outside a church in El Paso, Texas. This incident occurred right before a vigil for Charlie Kirk. The reports indicate that prior to the fire, the suspect allegedly distributed a hateful message related to the event.

The El Paso Police Department identified the accused as 35-year-old Mary Marquez from Denton. The alleged arson took place at Beth El Bible Church last Wednesday. According to the police, Marquez approached the church, placed a large bag against the wall, ignited it, and then left the area. Thankfully, the pastor spotted the flames soon after and was able to extinguish them.

Affidavits referenced in a KFOX14 report revealed that Marquez also left another bag inside the church, where a meeting was scheduled for Kirk the following day. This bag contained a paper plate with a disturbing message. Additionally, another plate inside the bag featured phrases that suggested a direct threat to those attending the vigil.

Investigators were able to locate Marquez through a business card left in the bag. The police stated that the bags she left contained paper plates inscribed with menacing words.

Marquez was arrested on September 18 and is being held at the El Paso County Detention Facility with a $50,000 bond. Reports mention that on the day of the incident, she approached church volunteers claiming she wanted to retrieve the package meant for Kirk’s vigil. One of the volunteers escorted her to the stage, noting the bag she had abandoned.

Volunteers later informed the police about the contents of the bag and indicated that the threats posed a significant risk to the church and those associated with the vigil.

The church expressed disappointment over the situation following Marquez’s arrest, stating that they believe in allowing local authorities to handle such matters. They also emphasized their commitment to forgiveness, thanking their faith for protecting their community.
