On Monday, Texas Republicans faced another setback in their attempts to address legislative issues, as Democrats exited the state to disrupt Republican-led initiatives before the mid-2026 elections. Governor Greg Abbott reiterated stark warnings for those absent, stating that their eventual return could bring serious consequences.
With four representatives shy of a quorum, Texas GOP members couldn’t move forward on flood assistance and rezoning proposals, marking the second consecutive week of this standoff.
Several states, like California, Illinois, Florida, and Maryland, also engaged in this district conflict as Republicans hold a narrow congressional majority.
A national contest over redistricting persists, with support from former President Donald Trump for Texas Democrats’ plans to redraw Congressional lines to gain more Republican seats in the House.
In retaliation, Texas Democrats stayed away from the legislative session to maintain relief from participation.
Governor Abbott criticized the absent Democrats, labeling them “co-sick.” During an interview, he asserted his power to summon the Texas Legislature for ongoing special sessions, intending to prolong any consequences faced by the fleeing lawmakers.
“This could stretch over 30 days,” Abbott explained. “Texas permits special sessions every month. Once one ends, I’ll call another immediately.” He stressed that returning to Texas would lead to arrests, leading absentees to remain out of state.
Abbott also pointed to a recent lawsuit submitted to the Texas Supreme Court, arguing that the departing lawmakers had forfeited their positions by failing to conduct business on behalf of Texans.
“This behavior is unprecedented in Texas history. From the Alamo onward, Texans stand their ground. What these individuals did was flee instead of confront the issue, seeking refuge in a state that aligns with their views.”
Supporting Abbott, House Speaker Dustin Burrows requested that the Texas Public Safety Department establish a tip line to locate the missing Democrats.
“We will diligently pursue reliable information until they return,” Burrows stated. “Members can escape to distant cities or states, but their responsibility to Texas remains.”
One of the absentees, Democrat Caucus Chairman Jean Wu, reportedly went to Chicago with her colleagues, disregarding the governor’s warnings while calling on Americans to “wake up.”
“We can’t keep resisting indefinitely. We simply need Americans to realize what’s at stake. Time is critical for Texans and all Americans. Let’s tackle these issues in all states, not just Texas.”
Democrats in Texas may face fines of $500 per day, which aren’t permissible to cover with campaign or official funds.
