Shooting Incident In Atascocita, Texas
On Friday afternoon, an off-duty Harris County deputy intervened in a tense situation when a man tried to enter a car with a young child nearby. The incident unfolded around 2:45 p.m. in Atascocita, located about 20 miles northeast of Houston. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported that the deputy called 911 after feeling threatened by someone aiming a firearm at him.
The deputy had just secured the child in a car seat when a man later identified as 27-year-old Darius Williams attempted to get into the vehicle. According to Maj. Ben Katrib, the deputy instructed Williams several times to stop, but Williams ignored the commands and opened the passenger door.
In response, the deputy fired his weapon, hitting Williams multiple times. Although emergency responders provided immediate assistance, Williams was pronounced dead shortly thereafter at a hospital, as reported by local news.
The deputy’s identity has not been disclosed, but officials confirmed that both he and the child were unharmed. There remains some uncertainty about whether Williams was armed at the time or how many shots were fired, adding layers of complexity to the incident.
Williams’ mother, Tinysia, revealed that her son had been facing mental health challenges and had just been released from prison the night before the confrontation. She mentioned a recent encounter where police had been called when he was found walking into oncoming traffic, raising questions about the handling of his situation.
Investigators are looking into the incident, including potential video evidence captured by nearby cameras. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are conducting separate investigations, and findings will eventually be presented to a grand jury to determine if any charges will be filed.
