A Dallas doctor is facing a lawsuit from the state of Texas for illegally providing cross-sex hormones to transgender youth.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Thursday that Dr. May Lau provided banned “sex-changing” hormones to more than 20 young people in violation of a Republican-backed ban that went into effect in Texas last year. announced that it would file a lawsuit against Dr. May Lau.
The case is the first time a state has attempted to enforce a law banning transgender medical procedures for minors, according to the Associated Press.

The complaint alleges that Lau, a professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and an expert in adolescent medicine, sexually abused children between the ages of 14 and 17 for the purpose of transitioning to malehood or confirming their gender identity. “Texas passed a law to protect children from dangerous, unscientific medical interventions that have irreversible and harmful effects,” Paxton said in a statement. “Doctors who continue to offer these harmful 'sex-changing' drugs and treatments will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
At least 26 states have adopted laws restricting or prohibiting transgender medical procedures for transgender minors, and most of those states are facing lawsuits. A federal judge struck down the bans in Arkansas and Florida as unconstitutional, but a federal appeals court left the Florida ruling in place. In Montana, a judge has issued a temporary order blocking enforcement of the ban. New Hampshire's restrictions are scheduled to go into effect in January.

The lawsuit comes weeks before the election, with Republicans attacking Democrats for supporting hormone therapy for transgender people and gender reassignment surgery for minors. Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has repeatedly accused his Democratic challenger, Rep. Colin Allred, of supporting transgender rights.
Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed a ban on transgender medical procedures. He is also the first governor to order an investigation into parents seeking transgender status for their children.
