Delivery Driver Collides with Robbery Suspect in Houston
A DoorDash driver in Texas experienced quite the chaotic situation while making a delivery. The driver was parked outside a home in the Greater Greenspoint area of Houston when a police chase unfolded nearby, leading to an unexpected encounter with a wanted robbery suspect.
According to video footage, the driver had just exited her vehicle with a customer’s food when she noticed a silver sedan speeding towards her. She attempted to back away but was unable to avoid a collision. The suspect’s car slammed into her vehicle, hitting her and sending her onto the hood of the car.
The suspect, later identified as Torrance Whitaker, immediately exited his vehicle and fled on foot, leaving the driver behind. In the midst of the chaos, the delivery driver managed to gather the scattered food order and retreat to the sidewalk as police vehicles pursued Whitaker.
Despite the turmoil, the delivery driver went on to complete her delivery, casually walking up to the front door with the food. One neighbor, Lily Portillo, expressed surprise, recalling, “I asked her if she was okay, and she said she was fine. She deserves a big tip for that.” Many were left in awe of her dedication.
Meanwhile, law enforcement searched the area for Whitaker, and an officer returned to ensure the driver was unharmed. “Yes, I’m fine,” she reassured him, despite enduring significant pain from the accident.
The driver reportedly did not suffer any broken bones but was left with considerable discomfort. She contemplated filing a claim with her auto insurance after the collision, and she lodged a complaint with the Houston Police Department against Whitaker for causing bodily harm.
As for Whitaker, who was already wanted for a burglary charge, he jumped over fences and through several yards before being caught by a police K-9 unit. He now faces charges for felony evading arrest and aggravated assault against the delivery driver, according to court documents.
