McCall Advocates for Immigration Detention Focus
Representative Michael McCall from Texas remarked on Sunday that the Trump administration should make the detention of illegal immigrants a priority, describing the situation as a “worsening felony.” During an interview, CBS anchor Margaret Brennan mentioned data indicating that nearly 47% of the 59,000 immigrants detained in the U.S. had no criminal record, and less than 30% had been convicted of any crime.
“These are not the worst offenders,” she noted.
Criminal Histories Highlighted by Immigration Officials
McCall shared his background as a former federal prosecutor, emphasizing the need for prioritization in addressing immigration issues. He indicated that, under Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and the Biden administration, federal law is being overlooked, leading to decisions to release detained individuals back into communities.
“I’ve seen a lot during my years in counter-terrorism,” McCall said. “You have to prioritize the worst offenders.” He expressed concerns about the current approach and questioned Brennan’s implication that the administration was tracking these figures accurately.
“You know, under Biden, about 15 to 20 million people have come into the country. It’s concerning,” he added. “Deterrence is key here. The anxiety at the border is nearly zero now.”
Calls for Enhanced Deportation Efforts
McCall claimed that, according to the Trump administration, a significant percentage of illegal immigrants arrested had prior convictions. The Deputy Director of the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, echoed this by stating that under Trump’s leadership, 70% of those apprehended had a criminal history that warranted enforcement action.
Overall, the sentiment reflected a push for stronger immigration control measures, with a clear delineation between those legally and illegally present in the country.
