Texas Governor Greg Abbott Bars 1 Million+ Ineligible People from Voter Rolls

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (Republican) has purged more than 1 million people from the state's voter rolls as part of an effort to bar ineligible voters, including those outside the state, from voting.

His action came 69 days before the presidential election on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.

Newsweek Reports 1.1 million people were removed from the voter rolls, including those who had moved out of state, died, or were not U.S. citizens. Senate Measure 1 (SB 1) will become law in September 2021.

At the time, the legislation was seen as one of several efforts by Republican-led states to ensure voter integrity following the 2020 presidential election.

According to Abbott's office, those removed from Texas' voter rolls include more than 6,500 foreign nationals, more than 6,000 voters with felony convictions, more than 457,000 deceased voters, more than 463,000 voters on the withholding list and more than 134,000 voters who indicated they had moved on their address verification notices.

An additional 65,000 voters who did not respond to the enquiry notice were also disqualified, along with more than 19,000 who requested to have their registration cancelled.

“The Secretary of State and county registrars of voters have an ongoing legal obligation to review voter rolls, remove ineligible voters, and refer any possible illegal votes to the Attorney General's office and local authorities to investigate and prosecute,” Greg Abbott said in a written statement. statement.

“Illegal voting will never be tolerated in Texas, and we will continue to aggressively protect Texans' sacred right to vote and aggressively protect our elections from illegal votes.”

Governor Abbott alleged voter fraud in June, “particularly in Houston,” and a local court ruling found more than 1,400 votes invalid in the 2022 election, forcing him to overturn the results, Breitbart News reported.

“Voter fraud is real, especially in Houston,” the governor posted on X. “Court finds 1,430 fraudulent votes in 180th District Court election.”
