Texas Governor Greg Abbott urges arrests of student protesters following walkout

Texas Governor’s Response to Student Protests

On Tuesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded to student demonstrators protesting against immigration policies, stating that those involved should face arrest if any violence occurs during school-related strikes.

Abbott referenced a law enforcement video showing the arrest of one student among two involved in a recent walkout in Kyle, Texas. This protest took place on Monday and saw around 500 students from five schools in the Hays Consolidated Independent School District participating in a demonstration against ICE.

Abbott expressed his views on social media, saying, “It’s time for these students to be arrested. It’s a crime to hurt anyone, even a student. Disruptive school-sanctioned strikes create exactly this type of disruption.”

During the strike, reports indicated that two students were found drinking alcohol, resulting in their arrests. One student was charged with several offenses, including assault on a public servant and underage drinking. The other student’s charges included resisting arrest.

Officials mentioned that further charges might follow. They clarified that, despite the protests, these arrests were not directly linked to the strike itself.

In his post, Abbott contended that schools and staff who permit unlawful behavior should not escape accountability. He hinted at potential funding cuts for schools that fail to adhere to their educational responsibilities, though it remains uncertain if this relates specifically to those hosting anti-ICE strikes. Abbott’s office has not yet commented on any inquiries regarding this matter.

The protests reportedly began after two residents were killed by federal agents, stirring widespread unrest and prompting calls from leaders for immigration enforcement to halt their activities in certain areas. Additionally, while students have rights to protest, they may face disciplinary actions for truancy or disruptions as highlighted by the American Civil Liberties Union.
