Texas homeowner shoots and kills man trying to steal his car, police say

Texas police say the homeowner shot dead Tuesday morning, they found a man who had broken into a car.

San Antonio police said they were called to a home at an apartment complex in the 8200 block of Micron Drive near Culebra Road around 3:50 a.m. for a report of a shooting.

When they arrived at the Oxford & Estonia Apartments residence, they found a man dead from gunshot wounds.

KSAT-TV report The man fled the scene, but collapsed and died nearby.

The homeowner told police he was getting ready for work when he noticed lights and people near his car. As the man tried to drive away, the homeowner opened fire, hitting the man several times.

Police said the homeowner has not yet been charged with any crimes in connection with the incident. He was only described as a man in his 50s. The man told police that this was the third time someone had tried to steal his car.

Jerry Bernal lives in the neighborhood and told KENS-TV that property crime is on the rise in the area.

“A lot of vehicles were broken into,” he said. “Sometimes cars will go left on the block or take the wheel, but that’s mostly theft. I think it happened out of necessity. I mean, there were so many break-ins. .”

Another resident of the apartment complex said he heard gunshots.

“For some reason, I feel like I woke up right before I heard that sound. And it sounded like a firecracker to me. But it was right near my apartment.” said Mike Long, who has lived in the complex for three years.

“It’s a nice complex, it’s a quiet complex, and a few months ago all the neighbors had their patio furniture stolen, so, well, a lot happens,” he added.

Neighbors said the complex’s gates had been vandalized for months, giving criminals free access to the apartments.

The deceased suspect was identified as a man in his 40s.

KSAT reported that there was a large amount of blood at the scene and police recovered several shell casings.
