Texas lawmaker James Talarico on the Democratic walkout: "It's time to stand up"

Texas Democrats Urged to Resist GOP Redistricting Efforts

Texas Senator James Talarico, a Democrat, emphasized the need for his party to “fight back” as they left the state to prevent a proposed redistricting plan that could provide the GOP with five additional opportunities to secure seats ahead of the 2026 midterms.

“My Democratic colleague and I are leaving Texas to challenge the quorum and counter Trump’s influence. He’s aiming to set up the midterm elections in his favor. But he’ll have to get past us first,” Talarico stated on social platforms, asserting that “that’s when we really push back.”

“They’re distorting our district’s shape to ensure the outcomes they desire for the 2026 elections. Once they gain this power, they won’t be held accountable by their voters. But Texas Democrats are standing firm,” he added.

A fellow Democrat recently highlighted the issue during an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, mentioning that Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) are attempting to manipulate the upcoming elections by redrawing the political landscape.

“It may sound dramatic, but… by altering the political map now, they’re trying to distance themselves from the will of the voters,” he remarked.

Talarico indicated to a local news outlet that he’s considering breaking quorum to stall the redistricting plans, although he referred to it as a “last resort.”

“Breaking quorum is a serious step and not something to take lightly,” he noted.

On Sunday, House Democrats in Texas denied the existence of a quorum for Republicans, as a state legislative panel pushed forward a congressional map perceived to be more favorable to the GOP.

Jean Wu, the Texas House Democratic Caucus Speaker, accused Republicans of “intentionally using discriminatory maps to silence millions of Black and Latino Texans, all as part of corrupt political maneuvering.”

“Indifference is complicity, and we will not remain silent while the hardworking communities that have fought for decades are ignored by Trump’s power grab,” Wu stated.

“We’re leaving, breaking quorum, and ensuring Republicans can’t silence our voices as they prepare for the next election. This isn’t merely about the Democrats. It’s about standing up for democracy.”

The Hill has reached out to both the White House and Texas Republicans for their take on the situation.
