A man in San Antonio was arrested on Thursday night for allegedly threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump. The concerning remark was made in a Facebook post where he wrote, “Don’t miss it.”
Robert Herrera, 52 years old, was taken into custody by a San Antonio police officer after making this threat, which occurred just three days prior to the first anniversary of an attack that nearly claimed Trump’s life during his candidacy.
In his Facebook post, Herrera responded to an article about Trump’s upcoming trip to Texas Hill Country, sharing a photo of the president flanked by Secret Service agents following an incident on July 13, 2024 when Trump was shot.
A fellow Facebook user replied to Herrera’s comment, saying, “I don’t get a chance.” To which Herrera responded, “I’m just coming for you,” also posting an image of a loaded attack rifle, according to prosecutors.
Upon discovering the threat, authorities swiftly arrested Herrera. He now faces federal charges related to threatening the president, which could result in significant prison time if he is convicted.
“I appreciate the rapid response from SAPD Chief McManus and his team. Let me emphasize that threats like these will not be taken lightly,” stated U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons from the Western District of Texas.
Aaron Tap, a special agent from the FBI’s San Antonio office, remarked, “While the FBI is committed to protecting free speech, threatening violence is not covered under that protection and is a federal offense.”
In closing, Police Chief William McManus expressed gratitude to the community members who reported the threat against the president, emphasizing the essential role of public support in law enforcement efforts.
