Body Discovers After Neighbor Reports Odor

Authorities in Texas revealed that a decomposing body belonging to a 68-year-old man might have gone unnoticed if not for a neighbor’s complaint about an unbearable smell emanating from the home.

The neighbor, referred to only as Lekan, called local news station KHOU-TV seeking assistance with the odor that had driven him away from his own condo.

Interestingly enough, the deceased man’s unit wasn’t even adjacent to Lekan’s, which adds to the mystery of how the smell was penetrating his living space.

Upon returning from a work trip on Friday, Lekan noticed flies lingering around the door, which prompted his curiosity. “I wondered what was there,” he recounted. “Then I got closer and, well, I could smell the stench.”

Throughout the weekend, the smell persisted, leading Lekan to contact his landlady, the homeowners’ association, and ultimately, 911.

After firefighters searched the building, they uncovered the body. Police confirmed there were no indications of foul play involved.

Even after the body was removed, the odor lingered, infiltrating Lekan’s food, clothing, and perhaps even his furniture. “It’s not something I can just ignore,” he expressed, clearly distressed. “I’m not quite sure how to handle this situation.”

He ended up having to book a hotel room, which creates a financial strain he hadn’t anticipated.

In a strange twist, Lekan noted that the source of the smell was not in close proximity to his own place. As it stands, no one quite understands why or how the odor extended to his home.

During an interview, KHOU reporter Michelle Choi had to step outside due to the overwhelming stench. Luckily for Lekan, while they were discussing the matter, a biohazard cleanup team was observed working inside the deceased man’s unit, and officials from the Houston Health Department responded to his complaint.

KHOU reported that they’re seeking answers from various local authorities, Lekan’s landlady, as well as the condo association.

“My home means everything to me,” Lekan remarked. “It’s my safe space.”
