Texas Man Scheduled for Execution Over Child’s Death
A Texas man is set to be executed on Thursday for the murder of his girlfriend’s 13-month-old daughter, in an incident prosecutors describe as a 30-hour ordeal of “exorcism.”
Blaine Milam, 35, was convicted in December 2008 for the killing of Amora Carson. Prosecutors allege that Milam assaulted the child with a hammer and subsequently strangled her.
The prosecutor highlighted the brutal nature of the crime, stating that Amora endured unimaginable violence over an extended period, resulting in multiple skull fractures and numerous bite marks on her tiny body.
Milam has maintained his innocence since his conviction, opting not to appeal. He attributed responsibility for the crime to his then-girlfriend, Jeseca Carson, claiming she believed the child was possessed by a demon, and he merely followed her lead. Carson was convicted of capital murder as well and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Milam’s defense team has argued for clemency, pointing to questionable evidence regarding bite marks and doubts about his intellectual capabilities.
The execution date has been postponed several times in the past, specifically in 2019 and 2021, while courts examined his claims. Ultimately, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that it was time to proceed, and a request for leniency was denied by the Texas Commission on Pardon and Parole.
Interestingly, the trial was relocated to Montgomery County, over 140 miles from where it initially took place, largely due to the significant media attention surrounding the case.
Texas remains the leading state in the United States for executions.
