Texas Social Studies Curriculum Update

A recent update to Texas’ social studies curriculum will require teachers to address the risks associated with communism, as reported.

The new framework, referred to as the “comprehensive” model, aims to present history in a chronological manner. It’s anticipated that these changes will significantly shift existing standards, according to the Houston Chronicle. Scheduled for implementation in the fall of 2030, the model, which has the backing of conservative board members, will place greater emphasis on Texas history and eliminate the previous world culture course. For instance, third graders will start with “The Birth of Western Civilization,” while eighth graders will focus exclusively on Texas history.

The State Board of Education approved this revised social studies plan with a narrow vote of 8-7 in September.

Under the new guidelines, the curriculum will prioritize Texas and U.S. history over world history and culture. This shift has raised eyebrows among Democrats on the board, who have voiced concerns about the potential reduction in representation and the delayed inclusion of lessons on nonwhite groups. Houston Democrat Stacey Childs has expressed worries about when individuals who look like her will learn about their history, particularly before reaching fifth grade.

Additionally, the standards are being restructured to meet a recently enacted state law mandating education on the dangers of communism.

The revised framework will require students to learn about the genocide in Cambodia, guerrilla movements in Latin America, and various atrocities inflicted by communist regimes, emphasizing the suffering of people under such governments. There’s also a focus on the current threats posed by communist ideologies to the U.S. and its allies.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Texas Board of Education for further comments on these developments.
