Texas middle school cheerleaders suffer burns on hands after coach’s ‘punishment’

Cheerleaders at Evans Junior High School in Lubbock, Texas, suffered first- and second-degree burns on their hands after being punished by their coach for making them “bear crawl” and “crab walk” on a hot outdoor track. . KAMCTV reported.

Angel Thompson, the mother of one of the cheerleaders, told KAMC that her daughter told her the cheerleaders “showed their hands because they were being punished.”

The cheerleaders were asked to do a one-mile bear walk or crab walk, the station said, adding that most were unable to continue after two laps due to pain and some became ill.

The girls said the punishment took place Wednesday at 2 p.m., KAMC said, adding that one of their parents checked the road temperature that afternoon and said it was at least 125 degrees.

“We told her that her hands were burnt, but she said she didn't care and made us go back to the truck,” one of the cheerleaders told the station on condition of anonymity. Ta.

KAMC added that the parents threatened the girls' future in cheerleading if the coach did not fulfill the penalty.

Some of the girls later went to see the school nurse, but police said their parents did not receive a call from the school about their daughter's injuries. KAMC said at least one cheerleader was seen in the burn unit at University Medical Center.

“It was malicious. It was intentional,” the mother of one of the cheerleaders told the station on condition of anonymity.

KAMC noted that parents want criminal charges filed against the teacher and said a police investigation is underway. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, the department said.
