Texas primary shaken by conflict over radical Islam as GOP urges Trump to choose a victor

Texas Senate Primary Heats Up Over Islamic Extremism

The upcoming U.S. Senate primary in Texas is becoming increasingly contentious, with debates surrounding Islamic extremism taking center stage. Republican leaders are urging President Trump to intervene in the situation.

Senator John Cornyn, who has served four terms, is set to compete against Texas Representative Ken Paxton, while another contender, Representative Wesley Hunt—who has aligned himself with Trump—enters the race as well.

Concerns are rising about a potentially damaging primary; Democrats have already seen a surge in early voting, raising fears of a possible November defeat and, even more worryingly, a shift toward Democratic control in Texas.

In a speech given in Corpus Christi, Senate Republicans called on President Trump to throw his support behind Cornyn, warning that ignoring the request could jeopardize Texas’s Republican hold.

Issues surrounding planned Muslim communities near Dallas and Fort Worth have emerged as prominent points of contention. Both Cornyn and Paxton are engaged in a battle of campaign advertisements that condemn Islamic extremism.

The controversial project, named Epic City, aims to create 1,000 housing units attached to a mosque and faith-based school. It appears to be unnerving some Republican insiders. “Their desire for an independent city is becoming a cause for concern,” mentioned a Texas Republican.

This initiative, partnered with the East Plano Islamic Center, reflects significant demographic changes; Muslims currently represent around 2% of Texas’s population, a notable increase from just 0.55% in 2000.

Recently, Paxton initiated a lawsuit aimed at blocking the Epic City development, labeling it an “illegal development” due to concerns over regulatory adherence relating to public infrastructure.

Paxton stated, “We won’t let anyone exploit the system to carry out illegal developments that damage our beautiful Texas.” Cornyn, on his end, has taken a hardline stance in advertisements, painting Islamic extremists as pushing a “bloodthirsty ideology” and asserting that Sharia law has no place in American society.

In contrast, Hunt has been critical of Cornyn, dubbing him “Sharia John” and highlighting a video where Cornyn expresses a Ramadan greeting using the phrase “Inshallah.”

Recent polling indicates that Paxton holds a narrow lead over Cornyn, while Hunt trails behind. This dynamic has raised alarms among conservative party members, who are worried about potential fallout down the line.

If Trump were to endorse a candidate, that individual could gain significant traction. Some insiders believe backing Cornyn is crucial; otherwise, they fear losing the Senate seat entirely.

During an event in Corpus Christi, all three candidates were present. When asked if he had picked a candidate to support, Trump responded affirmatively but didn’t disclose further details, hinting at the competition between the two while keeping his options open.

Republicans are anxious for Trump to take a stand; Senator Steve Daines emphasized that Cornyn is “the candidate who can secure a victory in Texas,” expressing concerns that either of the other candidates might increase the risk of losing the state.

Additionally, early voting data shows a striking increase, with Democrats gaining approximately 200,000 votes compared to 2020, while Republicans’ increase was a mere 33,000.

The state’s demographics are shifting rapidly; last year alone, Texas gained around 400,000 residents, with immigration significantly contributing to this rise.

The May primary runoff could prove to be pivotal for the Democrats’ aspirations to secure a traditionally Republican stronghold.

Meanwhile, a hypothetical general election matchup between Democrat Jasmine Crockett and Paxton shows Crockett leading by a narrow margin.

Paxton is also dealing with various ethical concerns that could be utilized against him in the campaign, including personal matters as well as his efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential election results.

On the Democratic front, Crockett faces criticism from Governor Greg Abbott and is in a close race with fellow Democratic state Representative James Talarico, who is actively boosting his fundraising since his non-appearance on a prominent late-night show.
