Deputy Fired After Texas State University Student’s Death in Shooting

A tragic police-related incident in Texas has led to the death of an 18-year-old Texas State University freshman, John Mendoza Jr. Following an investigation, Deputy Kevin Tippit has been dismissed from his position.

According to Sheriff Bo Stallman, the decision to terminate Tippit came after a week-long inquiry into the shooting, which occurred on June 1. “Law enforcement officers have significant powers, but they also carry the responsibility to make sound judgments and uphold the standards of their profession,” Stallman stated.

Details surrounding the incident reveal that Tippit attempted to stop Mendoza outside Jackson Lake shortly after midnight. Mendoza, who was returning home from a nearby park, reportedly fled and led deputies on a short pursuit before parking his vehicle in a garage where Tippit confronted him.

It was then that Tippit discharged his firearm, striking Mendoza. The young man was taken to a local hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

“Your family lost a son, and his friends lost a loved one. Regardless of the investigation’s outcome, your grief is entirely valid,” Stallman expressed in a public message to Mendoza’s family. He assured them that Mendoza would be remembered.

The Texas Rangers are currently undertaking the investigation in conjunction with the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office, which will ultimately review the case. The district attorney emphasized that a thorough investigation is essential and will be presented to a grand jury for further actions.

Stallman clarified that the firing of Tippit was separate from the ongoing investigation into his actions that night. He acknowledged that reactions to this decision might vary, stating, “I understand that not everyone will agree with my decision.” He emphasized that his role is to make informed choices while respecting the integrity of the investigation.

Allison, Mendoza’s sister, has called for justice, stating that the family seeks accountability while honoring her brother’s memory. She noted that the officer allegedly followed her brother from the park and shot him without warning, leading to vital minutes being wasted before help arrived.

“John was failed at every step, and our family is left with painful questions,” she lamented.
