Texas State University student Devion Canty Jr expelled for reenacting Charlie Kirk assassination starts GoFundMe, says he made an error

A Texas State University student has been expelled for laughing at the assassination of Charlie Kirk during a memorial for him. Devion Canty Jr. described his actions as a mistake made in the heat of the moment.

In a GoFundMe campaign he launched a few days later to help with educational expenses, Canty explained that he faced the choice of being expelled or withdrawing from the university. He chose the latter, citing concerns for his safety and the wellbeing of the campus community.

Canty claims he is being portrayed negatively, describing himself as a “passionate student” who simply acted poorly at the time. He mentioned feeling targeted with racial slurs and witnessing women being mistreated, affirming he didn’t intend to harm anyone.

The fundraiser, titled “Back to TXST,” follows an incident where Canty was filmed mocking Kirk’s assassination after Kirk was shot at an event in Utah. Footage captured him reenacting the scene, drawing criticism and prompting attention from state officials.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott condemned the behavior, stating it is unacceptable and that the student involved would be expelled. School officials quickly identified Canty and others in the viral video and acted to remove them from the university.

The university president reiterated the institution’s commitment to not tolerating actions that trivialize violence, reinforcing the values of Texas State University.

Canty later chose withdrawal from the university, stating he was presented with options of “immediate expulsion or withdrawal.” By the weekend following the incident, he had raised nearly $2,000 of a $9,000 goal, expressing hope for his educational future.

This incident highlights a growing trend on fundraising platforms, as individuals seek financial support after being removed from educational or professional environments for controversial comments or actions.

Meanwhile, some fundraisers tied to similar incidents have seen substantial donations, reflecting the polarized environment around discussions of free speech and accountability.

While Canty’s situation has drawn attention, it also raises questions about the balance between free expression and the consequences that may follow controversial actions.
