Texas store surpasses major food brands like Costco and Trader Joe's to become the best grocery store in America

A Texas grocery chain has once again secured the title of America’s top grocer, surpassing notable names like Amazon, Costco, and Trader Joe’s.

HEB, which is based in San Antonio, was named the No. 1 grocery retailer in the country for the fifth time in the last nine years, as highlighted in Dunn Humby’s recent annual grocery store rankings.

This family-owned business, founded back in 1905 and now operating more than 440 locations, has established itself as a leading retailer because of its exceptional ability to combine savings, quality, customer experience, and variety, according to the study.

Market Basket from Massachusetts ranked second, while Woodman’s from Wisconsin took the third spot.

Dunhamby pointed out that, interestingly, all three leading retailers are regional chains this year.

Costco came in fourth, followed by Aldi, Winco Foods, Trader Joe’s, Amazon, Wegmans, and ShopRite to round out the top 10.

Notably, Amazon, which held the top ranking in both 2021 and 2022, fell two spots this year, and Sam’s Club also dropped six positions.

The study reviewed 81 significant grocery stores in the U.S., assessing financial performance along with insights from over 11,000 shoppers. Participants shared thoughts on price, quality, convenience, and online shopping experiences.

These rankings emerge as consumers deal with heightened financial stress.

Matt O’Grady, president of Dunhumby’s Americas division, mentioned that shopper confidence dropped last year amid concerns about inflation, limited job opportunities, and stagnant wages.

“People across various income levels are feeling the financial squeeze and are opting for more price-sensitive choices,” O’Grady commented.

He added, “In such an environment, gaining trust from American shoppers has become crucial.”

According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from December, food prices climbed by 0.7% in that month, an increase of 3.1% compared to the same time last year.

The overall CPI index indicated that inflation resulted in a 0.3% rise in prices last month, accumulating to 2.7% for the year.
