A middle school teacher in Texas Hailed as a hero This comes after he used a gun to thwart an alleged sexual assault on a teenage girl outside his Houston home.
The incident was recorded on security cameras.
“To be honest, I was scared too, but I had no choice because she needed help more than I feared.”
David Garza spoke to KHOU-TV about the incident, which began just before midnight on July 28.
“I looked out the window and saw a man hitting a woman on the ground and trying to take off her clothes,” Garza said.
He quickly sprung into action and grabbed his pistol.
“I ran outside and asked what was going on. The girl yelled, ‘I’m 15, help me!’ I pointed the gun at him and told him to leave,” Garza recalled.
The security clip is from KHOU. Video Report The video shows Garza pointing a gun at the attacker, who then grabbed the girl by her hair.
“He let go right away,” Garza added. “He chased her and I chased him, but she got away.”
Police said the man chased the girl off a subway bus and then attacked her. He fled, but authorities were able to obtain a description of the suspect and still images taken from the bus.
A neighbor who witnessed the attack from her window said the suspect would have raped the girl if Garza had not intervened.
Garza added that this isn’t the first time he’s had to chase a man to protect a child: “I think it’s something anybody would do, to come and help a child.”
Police said the man was wearing a black hoodie with a white Reebok logo, white tennis shoes and blue jeans.
“I’ll be honest with you, I was scared,” Garza said, “but I knew she needed help more than I was scared, so I had to do it.”
