Texas teen Madison Lewis fighting for her life after gas thrown on fire, mother says

A Texas teen suffered burns over 90 percent of her body after a boy threw a pot of gasoline into a fire during a holiday gathering, her mother said.

17-year-old Madison Lewis remains unresponsive at a Dallas hospital, Fox Dallas reports.

“There's nothing I want or need more than for my baby girl to be safe and to live her life. She's 17 years old,” Erica Hammond, Madison's mother, said in her daughter's room at Parkland Hospital. told the press.

Hammond said Lewis was standing around a barrel of fire with friends when the boy threw something into it.

“At first we thought it was a glass, but now we know it was a real pot and a barrel full of petrol. They say it just exploded and flew in her direction.” she said. “It was devastating. Her whole body was completely burned.”

Lewis, a senior at Jacksboro High School, has since undergone at least four surgeries.

“This is the first year since I became a mother that I haven't wrapped a single Christmas present. Not one,” Hammond said.

According to her mother, the girl plans to graduate this year and go to university.

Her mother, Erica Hammond, said the pot “exploded and went inside her.” [daughter’s] direction.

Doctors reportedly stopped administering painkillers on Tuesday to see if her response improved.

“She's graduating in May and going to college in August, but there's still a lot of work to do here,” Hammond said. “That's why. I mean, she's a warrior. She's a martial artist. What we need most right now is prayers for her healing and her poor body.”
