Texas teen rodeo star fatally dragged by horse while tending to sick calf in shocking accident: ‘A great kid’

A Texas teenager was seriously injured and later died Monday after being dragged by a horse while tending to a sick calf.

“Somehow, the man’s legs got tangled and the horse [dragged] “The Lott Fire Department chased him quite a distance in the field.” He told KWTX-TV.

The Falls County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death of 18-year-old Ace Patton Ashford, posting on Facebook that they were “deeply saddened by the loss of Ace Ashford. Our condolences go out to his family.”

“Ace Patton, I love you forever,” his girlfriend, Sydney Boatwright, wrote on Facebook along with a photo of the two of them. Ashford’s mother, Jamie Ashford, wrote on Facebook: “Ace we miss you so much! Love you more!”

Ashford had just graduated from Rosebud Lott High School in the spring and was preparing to attend Hill College on a rodeo scholarship.

“Ace loved the cowboy way of life and was the very definition of a hard-working country man,” his obituary stated. “Ace loved rodeo and was known as ‘Header’ in team roping. Ace spent countless hours roping to reach his full potential.”

Ashford suffered head injuries and was taken by helicopter to a hospital, where he later died, according to KWTX.

“Ace was a kind-hearted man who was loved by all who knew him. Ace never met a stranger and was an old soul,” the obituary added. “He would do anything to lend a hand to anyone in need.”

Fellow rodeo rider Cody Snow described Ashford as “as pure as it gets,” according to Team Roping Journal.

The father of a fellow rodeo rider from his high school days told the Journal, “From the time I spent with him, he didn’t talk much and didn’t bother anybody. He’d rather be outside working on yearling calves than go roping sometimes. He was a good kid. It’s hard to put into words what kind of kid he was. At the high school rodeo, he was the kid who got everybody to push their bulls.”

Rodeo flag bearer Marcus Becerra told the Journal that Ashford “is the kind of person I would want my son to be, so it’s very hard for me. Everybody knows what a good kid he was, how caring he was, how well-mannered he was. He was great with horses, well-mannered, just a great kid.”

“With fragging, I get to meet the kids when they’re little and get to know them. I get to watch them when they’re little and watch them win and cheer them on.”
