Bee Escape in Texas: 18-Wheeler Overturns
In a surprising incident in Orange County, Texas, an 18-wheeler that was transporting millions of bees overturned near a suburban area, prompting officials to advise local residents to stay indoors.
This warning came from county emergency officials, who announced the situation Sunday morning, emphasizing the potential danger posed by the bees.
“Everyone living near the 1130/Colony Dr. area is asked to remain indoors. An 18-wheeler full of beehives has flipped over, and there are a significant number of bees nearby,” emergency officials stated.
Local beekeepers sprang into action to assist with the cleanup. A local business, Queen Bee Supply, LLC, shared updates on social media, showing beekeepers working diligently to manage the chaos and save the bees.
“It’s not something I want to see, but it’s really heartening to witness beekeepers coming together,” a coworker remarked in a post.
Christy Ray, the owner of Queen Bee Supply, mentioned that one of the commercial beekeepers who responded actually owned the bees in transit. I mean, that must have been quite a concern for him.
“There are millions of bees on trucks,” Ray noted, adding, “I don’t know the exact number, but I’ve been told it can hold over 400 beehives.”
A photojournalist covering the scene for a CBS affiliate reported that the truck was transporting close to 2 million bees. That’s a staggering number, isn’t it?
Fortunately, by the afternoon, emergency officials stated that most of the hives had been cleared from the area. An update revealed that around 75% of the hives were unloaded, with efforts continuing to relocate them to nearby honey farms.
Authorities advised residents to steer clear of the accident site and exercise caution, as two roads behind the neighborhood remained closed to facilitate the ongoing work.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Similar accidents have occurred in recent years; just last month, another truck carrying millions of bees crashed in North Dakota, leaving the driver considerably stung.
