Wealthy Texas Woman Accused of Fatal Crash on First Date
A wealthy housewife from Texas has been charged with manslaughter after a tragic incident during her first date, where she reportedly hit a drunken man with her car. Christina Chambers, 34, claims her high-end designer heels got stuck on the gas pedal of her Porsche 911 Carrera, contributing to the accident.
The trial started on Friday, focusing on an April 2023 collision that resulted in the death of 33-year-old Joseph McMullin. He was leaving a Voodoo Donuts in Houston when the crash occurred.
According to prosecutors, Chambers had been bar hopping and was found to be over four times the legal limit for alcohol at the time of the crash. They also noted that cocaine was found in her car and wallet.
Chambers’ attorney, Mark Thiessen, argued that the expensive Christian Louboutin heels she was wearing were responsible for the incident, claiming they got caught in the gas pedal during a sharp turn on a notoriously dangerous curve in Houston.
However, prosecutor Andrew Figliuzzi pushed back, suggesting that Chambers was simply showing off her luxury vehicle to her friends who were in the car at the time.
Medical records revealed that Chambers’ blood alcohol content was 0.301 about an hour after the crash, highlighting the severity of her intoxication.
Briana Iturino, who had been on a date with McMullin, testified that as they were leaving Voodoo Donuts around 2:25 a.m., she saw headlights approaching at a high speed, later estimating the car was moving over 110 mph. The Porsche zoomed past her, narrowly missing her, and when she turned back, McMullin was no longer there.
Initially thinking he had moved out of the way, Iturino soon realized he had been struck and was thrown approximately 30 feet upon hitting a pole. Despite her calls to 911 and attempts to perform CPR, McMullin did not survive.
Both Chambers and her passengers suffered injuries in the crash. Alfredo Ponce, a local pool hall manager, described the accident as one of the worst he had encountered. Upon reaching the scene, he noted the smell of alcohol emanating from the sports car.
Chambers faces manslaughter charges in McMullin’s death and has denied wrongdoing, with prosecutors claiming she was speeding and lost control of the vehicle.
Since her arrest two years ago, Chambers’ case has been embroiled in legal turmoil. A wrongful death suit filed by McMullin’s parents is still pending, aiming for over $1 million in damages. They also include Chambers’ ex-partner, Xuan See, in the lawsuit, accusing him of purchasing the luxury car months before the incident. However, See contends he bought the car using joint funds and denies claims regarding Chambers’ drinking habits.
In court, Sebastian Lopez, a friend who was present during the crash, described Chambers as having a drinking problem and claimed See was aware of her regular alcohol consumption and drug use.
The legal battles continue, with the criminal case and civil suit set to unfold further in the coming months.
