State capitals aren’t just trivia answers; many of them are considered some of the best places to live in the United States. However, there’s quite a range in how these cities stack up against each other.
According to Chip Lupo, an analyst at WalletHub, the capital often represents not just the governmental hub but also the economic heart of the state. This leads to many benefits, like stronger job markets, higher average salaries, and access to esteemed universities. Plus, they often boast more attractions, eateries, and cultural venues, alongside enhanced educational and healthcare resources.
WalletHub identified the top ten state capitals to live in: Austin, Texas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; Madison, Wisconsin; Boise, Idaho; St. Paul, Minnesota; Lincoln, Nebraska; Bismarck, North Dakota; Denver, Colorado; and Salt Lake City, Utah.
Interestingly, some notable capitals like Boston (23rd), Indianapolis (29th), Honolulu (34th), and Baton Rouge (47th) scored relatively low, mainly due to issues like affordability and educational quality.
The cities that ranked the lowest include Little Rock, Arkansas; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Trenton, New Jersey; Augusta, Maine; and Jackson, Mississippi.
In the comprehensive report, WalletHub assessed all 50 state capitals using 48 different scales. These metrics covered aspects from affordability and economic stability to crime rates and K-12 education quality.
Each metric received a weight and was scored on a 100-point scale, where 100 indicates the most livable state capital. The factors were grouped into four main areas: affordability, economic well-being, education and health, and quality of life. Based on this, each capital received an overall ranking.
