The 2024 Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee: Letters

The issue: The Republican National Convention, held last Thursday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I watched all four days of the Republican National Convention and was deeply moved (“Don like you’ve never seen him before,” July 19).

When Trump spoke I wanted to cry and cheer at the same time. His opening remarks about the assassination attempt on him made me cry and thank God he is still here.

The rest of the speech was about unity among all Americans and cooperation between all sides, even when there are differences. It struck just the right tone to bring the country together again.

The Republican National Convention was inspiring, uplifting, and deeply patriotic.

Former President Donald Trump is far more of a leader than his loquacious opponent, and his message Thursday night was one of hope for a chance to return the country to its former greatness.

But I worry that Trump’s rise, the assassination attempt, and Biden’s decline have pushed the Democratic Party into a state of despair.

To maintain the power they enjoy, they may use the nuclear option of replacing President Biden with someone like Michelle Obama.

The only sensible thing Trump said on Thursday night was, “I shouldn’t be here today.” Meanwhile, Hulk Hogan is out of work and must have needed a few pennies to make a speech.

As I listened to the so-called Christian conservatives at the Republican National Convention, I couldn’t help but wonder if they were using a different Bible.

Nowhere in my Bible can I find it that says, “Welcome foreigners, unless they’re from one of those ‘shitty’ countries.”

These Republicans have forgotten Exodus 20:3, “You shall have no other gods before me,” otherwise I don’t know how they could continue to worship a false prophet like Trump, who is the exact opposite of Jesus Christ.

Trump’s rambling speech was nasty, vindictive and full of misinformation and lies. He suggested the 2020 election was stolen, then said the U.S. and the world were in the best economic condition in history. It read like a campaign speech.

And his speakers were all great: Eric Trump gave a speech so bad his dad apparently dozed off for a while, then a drunk Hulk Hogan showed up in a perfectly attired outfit.

Is this the best the Republican Party can do? If Trump wins this election, it will be a very sad time for our country.

I tuned in to the Republican National Convention and listened to Vivek Ramaswamy, Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley (“Old Enemies, All for Don,” July 17).

But unfortunately, Ms. Haley’s speech did not impress me. Mr. Ramaswami and Mr. DeSantis spoke very well and I have a feeling they may get cabinet posts if the Republicans win in November.

Haley’s speech, on the other hand, was not convincing, perhaps the recent loss of her father has affected her speaking ability.

The RNC was a complete waste of time.

Trump’s claim that immigrants come from prisons is false, as is his claim that he has overseen the best economy in our country’s history, PBS reported.

One might wonder if Trump was drunk when he was speaking, but that’s too much of an excuse for him.

Trump is just used to lying and letting slip stories without needing to realize that it’s time to start telling the truth. His speech was the opposite of unity. I, and many other Americans, fear what’s to come.

Ramaswami, Haley and especially DeSantis delivered powerful, persuasive and memorable speeches – so well-done that at times they even brought a smile to Trump’s face.
