Seven Steps to Enhance Longevity

Leading a healthy lifestyle is commonly linked to increased lifespan, but experts suggest several additional measures. David Cravit and Larry Wolf, the co-founders of SuperagingNews.com, have recently unveiled a new book titled “Superaging: Gooking Gooking olve Gooking,” which follows their earlier work, “The Superaging Workbook.”

In their book, they outline “Superaging 7,” a set of guidelines aimed at promoting health and longevity.

In a conversation with a digital news platform, Cravit and Wolf explored the concept of aging without feeling old.

Cravit, who is 65, emphasized the potential of continued growth and learning: “I might be 65, but I feel like I have another 30 years ahead of me.” He noted the existence of 101,000 centenarians in the U.S., suggesting that a positive mindset can significantly influence one’s lifespan.

1. Attitude

The authors assert that a positive outlook is crucial for superaging. Cravit suggests that good behavior alone isn’t enough; research indicates that a positive attitude can influence health on a cellular level, impacting stress and inflammation—factors linked to many aging-related diseases. He encourages older individuals to actively work on their attitude and strive for positivity.

2. Consciousness

Awareness of new research regarding health and longevity is also important. Cravit pointed out that adjusting our lifestyles based on these findings, like reducing sedentary habits or altering diets, can be beneficial. It’s about staying informed and making proactive changes.

3. Activity

Exercise remains a key component of longevity. Wolf emphasized that daily movement—whether it’s stretching, strength training, or simple walks—can have remarkable benefits. He advocates for short bursts of activity throughout the day, stating, “Even five minutes of exercise can positively impact your well-being.” Mental engagement is equally vital; keeping the brain active and challenged helps maintain cognitive function.

4. Achievement

Setting new goals post-retirement is essential. Wolf insists that having a purpose, whether through volunteering or learning new skills, keeps individuals engaged and fulfilled. “We need something to work toward,” he said.

5. Attachments

Maintaining relationships with loved ones plays a significant role in well-being. Wolf, who has been married for nearly 60 years, highlights the importance of nurturing these connections and broadening social circles.

6. Autonomy

Experts suggest that maintaining independence—both physically and financially—contributes to a longer life. Wolf noted that managing one’s finances is crucial to sustaining that independence in later years.

7. Avoid

Finally, the authors caution about the risks associated with aging, such as ageism and online scams. Awareness of one’s digital environment is important, and Wolf advises seniors to be vigilant about the information they encounter online.

The essence of superaging, according to Wolf, is about living a meaningful life. “Focus on the basics,” he concludes. Simple, everyday actions can lead to a longer, healthier existence. If approached positively, life can continue to be rewarding and fulfilling.
