The 'absurd' aspect of NFL training camp media that J.J. Watt finds frustrating

JJ Watt Critiques NFL Training Camp Analysis

JJ Watt has expressed his frustration with the intense scrutiny surrounding NFL training camps.

The former All-Pro player took to social media recently, calling out sports media for how they interpret preseason statistics. His post read, “Training camp ‘stats’ is insane and ridiculous.” Watt shared that he initially thought these analyses were just jokes, but seeing them presented seriously made him question their purpose and context.

He noted, “A training camp session could be designed for a specific situation, like a third-and-long blitz, where plays naturally favor the defense. Coaches might have quarterbacks focus solely on one type of route.”

Watt, now 36, emphasized that the goal of training camps is to help players progress as they head into the season. “Practice is for learning,” he stated. “You’re supposed to experiment and discover what works.” He underlined that the key objective is to develop skills in preparation for the actual games.

His remarks have resonated positively across the sports community, with some commentators echoing his sentiments. Giants host John Schmeekle remarked, “I can’t find enough numbers to amplify this,” in response to Watt’s observations.

In a conversation about media reactions, Athletic’s Zach Kiefer advised against overreacting to training camp tweets and suggested reading the full context.

Watt himself has transitioned into a media role following his 12-year career in the NFL, becoming an in-game analyst this season with CBS Sports alongside Ian Eagle.

“The atmosphere on NFL game day is unbeatable,” Watt shared. “I couldn’t pass up the chance to experience that each week, especially working with someone as great as Ian.” While he misses the physicality of the game, he finds comfort in escaping the field without the bruises—at least, unless Eagle decides to mix things up.
