The actual cause of the challenges facing American churches

Recent data reveals a troubling trend: between 2018 and 2024, there were 1,384 recorded hostile incidents against churches in the United States. This alarming figure, which includes acts like vandalism and shootings, indicates an eight-fold rise since five years ago.

There’s a sense that this increase wasn’t a surprise; it was merely a question of when it would happen. It’s hard to ignore the signs when a culture shifts away from its God-oriented roots and openly ridicules sacred institutions, creating an environment that fosters conflict instead of peaceful coexistence.

One recent incident highlights this disturbing trend—a shooting in Seattle. During a gathering at a church, two individuals unleashed over 30 rounds from automatic weapons, targeting a crowd that included the family of a recently baptized young man. This wasn’t just random violence; it targeted the very idea of a sanctuary.

Pastor Russell Johnson reflected on this terrifying event, noting that it wasn’t merely an act of gang violence but a calculated assault on the sanctity of a place of worship. Following the shooting, the attackers set their vehicle ablaze in a church parking lot, sending a grim message: the church is within reach of their aggression.

A Disturbing Pattern

This shooting didn’t occur in isolation; it followed a history of hostility directed at the same church, which had previously faced backlash for its prayer meetings advocating for traditional biblical values concerning marriage and gender. Local authorities and activists condemned these gatherings, painting them as extreme.

The progression of these events is clear. First, biblical beliefs are reframed as political extremism, and then those who hold such views are labeled as threats to public safety. This shift in narrative not only excuses but arguably encourages violence against those perceived as threats.

Similar incidents are occurring throughout liberal regions. In Washington, a woman traveled from Texas to commit arson against a church, resulting in substantial losses. Her fervor for destruction echoes through the same mindset that breeds violent actors targeting church gatherings.

This escalation isn’t a recent phenomenon. Groups like Jane’s Revenge have overtly threatened mass violence against faith-based gatherings, particularly amid the debates surrounding abortion. Over 100 violent attacks against churches and pregnancy centers have been documented since a notable Supreme Court decision concerning abortion was leaked.

The Spiritual Underpinnings

It’s crucial to understand that this is a clash not just of cultures, but of ideologies. Those in opposition to biblical truths face an ever-increasing level of hostility. The apostle Paul articulated this centuries ago, warning of battles not fought against flesh but against spiritual forces. This ancient conflict remains alive today, manifested in violence against those standing firm in their beliefs.

The enemy’s tactics are both predictable and age-old. If they cannot corrupt the Church through compromise, they will seek to destroy it through intimidation. As one scripture vividly depicts, the enemy is angered by those who uphold God’s commandments.

A Call to Action

This is not a moment for the church to retreat. If congregants simply remain silent, waiting for the storm to pass, they might be ignoring that the tempest is actually intensifying. Christ’s teachings encourage resilience and joy in the face of adversity.

Pastors need to communicate the reality of these threats to their congregations so that they can be spiritually and mentally prepared for whatever comes next. This preparation isn’t about inciting fear; it’s about wisdom and awareness.

We need men of faith to step up, not just for their families but for their congregations. Courage rooted in biblical convictions is essential in times like these. Believers must ready themselves spiritually and physically because sheep need strong shepherds to guard against the wolves.

These aggressions are not coincidental; they reflect a push against the light of truth that many hold dear. In a culture that increasingly views devout Christianity as a threat, it falls on practitioners to remain steadfast and committed to their beliefs.

Governmental Failings

The crisis sharpens in light of a government that has seemingly abandoned its duty in handling such issues. Seattle’s mayor has aligned with groups that threaten religious freedoms, thus pushing many faith-based communities to resort to private security for protection.

The biblical mandate for governments is to uphold justice, punishing wrongdoing while rewarding good. When they fail to do so, they expose themselves as agents of chaos, straying from their divine responsibilities.

Christians must pray for those in authority while remaining loyal to God’s ultimate truth, affirming that while they obey legitimate authority, they cannot forsake their faith.

Victory Through Faithfulness

The increase in violence targeting Christians signals a deeper spiritual darkness, yet it simultaneously affirms the power of the Gospel. The enemy won’t waste energy on territory already under control. The intensity of these attacks reaffirms the vibrant light of Christ in a world that often prefers darkness.

Our responses should be rooted in biblical principles: fearing God above all else, loving our enemies, and praying for those who oppose us, while also preparing to defend those who are vulnerable. We must uphold the truth of God’s love, recognizing that the Gospel remains the hope for transformation.

As Jesus reminded us, although we may face trials in this life, He has already overcome the world.

The Church stood resilient through ancient persecutions and will undoubtedly navigate the challenges posed by a society misapprehending its own fleeting power. Our King reigns, victory is assured, and our calling remains clear: stand firm, proclaim the truth, and trust in God’s sovereignty.

The turmoil may be fierce, but remember—the Lamb has triumphed. In His strength, we too will prevail.
