The American dream needs to change, says the CEO of the American Cancer Society.

Up until July 4, the Post, in partnership with the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, is highlighting stories from U.S. citizens, including those from Pennsylvania, who share their views on what the American Dream looks like in 2026. One such voice is Karen Knudsen, CEO of the American Cancer Society.

Knudsen believes that the American Dream fundamentally represents possibility. She expresses that anyone can pursue their passions, whether in science or engineering, with the only real barrier being oneself.

Her parents both valued education deeply. Her father, who had a typical middle-class education, became the first intelligence officer in Delta Force, while her mother faced more challenges yet served on the board of Williams-Sonoma for 25 years.

The enthusiasm for education was a constant in their household. They taught Knudsen and her siblings that education is vital for leading a fulfilling life. Even now, she and her husband share the same values with their sons. It’s not just about wealth; achieving personal goals is what leads to happiness, and there are various paths to those achievements.

Knudsen credits her family’s access to quality educators and educational opportunities for their current life choices, highlighting the importance of living in a good school district.

However, she expresses concern about the current state of American education. While there seems to be increasing attention on STEM fields and future career paths, she worries progress isn’t fast enough to prepare for upcoming challenges.

Additionally, Knudsen raises questions about the readiness of the country for a global market and what it will mean for future generations. She emphasizes that as a community, it’s crucial to think thoughtfully about how to navigate these changes.

In her view, the American Dream requires renewed focus and a deeper understanding of what societal and professional landscapes will look like going forward.

The American Dream Video Project aims to share authentic stories that shed light on opportunities available to individuals. This initiative, showcased by the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, is part of the year-long celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, highlighting real stories about pursuing the American Dream.
