The Benchmark for Republican Foreign Policy Has Shifted Away from Ronald Reagan

Sen. Lindsey Graham Praises Trump’s Military Action Against Iran

On Saturday, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), known for his longstanding support of U.S. involvement in the Middle East, praised the Trump administration’s decision to engage militarily with Iran during an appearance on Fox News Channel.

The Republican senator characterized the overthrow of the Iranian regime as “the biggest change in a thousand years.” He went on to describe President Donald Trump as the “gold standard” for Republican foreign policy.

“Today, I feel thankful that President Trump won and Kamala Harris lost,” he stated. “I don’t mean to get too political right now, but I’m responding to what the Arizona senator has done. The modern Democratic Party really struggles when faced with evil. People like General Soleimani and al-Baghdadi—they seem to accept deals that are just nonsensical. Trump, on the other hand, gets it. I’ve been in discussions with him for weeks; he recognizes the Ayatollah mentality.” He likened the Ayatollah to a figure akin to Hitler, suggesting that he won’t change and may try to draw Trump into a prolonged conflict. However, he acknowledged that Trump stood up to hostile forces, deeming this action as the most significant achievement by any president since 1979. “Trump understood the malevolent nature of this regime and played a crucial role in its decline,” he added.

Graham asserted, “This military initiative is overwhelmingly effective. It will dismantle the regime’s machinery. Trump is encouraging the Iranian populace to take advantage of this moment, and I genuinely believe that will occur. The regime will gradually lose authority across the nation. Some cities are likely to be reclaimed by the people. They will become increasingly isolated. Iranian military leaders should know we are monitoring their activities closely. Those who align with us will reap rewards, while those who choose to support the Ayatollah will face severe consequences.” He expressed a strong hope that the Ayatollah meets a similar fate, calling him “a despicable human being” and drawing parallels to Hitler for his oppressive regime.

Continuing, Graham expressed that he sees a potential for friendship with certain Iranians, stating, “There’s a segment of the Iranian population that admires America, President Trump, and even me. They could become our allies. Although it will be complicated, the downfall of the largest state sponsor of terrorism could redefine the path toward peace in the Middle East. This moment might be unprecedented.” He contemplated the geopolitical implications of a regime change, suggesting that it could lead to renewed peace talks between Saudi Arabia and Israel, highlighting the significance of this potential shift.

Graham conveyed that “the gold standard for Republican foreign policy has transitioned from Ronald Reagan to Donald J. Trump.” He emphasized Trump’s decisive actions against terrorism, including challenges to both Venezuela and the broader threat from Iran, and remarked on Trump’s understanding of the complexities involved. “The Ayatollah is not looking for peace but for destruction, much like historical figures who desired domination. Trump recognizes this and has acted accordingly,” Graham concluded, offering his support for Trump’s actions.
