The Boy Scouts of America announced Tuesday that it will no longer be known by that name in order to become a more inclusive organization.
This organization became known as Scouting America.
The scouts have been hit by a scandal involving thousands of sexual assault allegations and a massive $2.4 billion bankruptcy reorganization that included legal settlements with victims.
“For the next 100 years, we want America’s youth to feel very welcome to join our programs,” said Boy Scouts of America President and CEO ) said Roger Krone. Associated Press.
“Part of my job is to reduce as much as possible any barriers for people to accept and join us as an organization,” he added.
The Boy Scouts faced criticism from traditionalists after its 2017 decision to allow girls into membership. Since then, it has enrolled more than 176,000 girls nationwide.
The name change will officially take place on February 8, 2025, the 115th anniversary of the company’s founding.
“Our mission has not changed at all. The Scout Oath and the Scout Act continue to guide our work,” said Bob Brown, vice president of communications for the local chapter of the Connecticut Yankee Council.

The Yankee Council announced that 14% of the 14,000 Scouts were women.
Following its bankruptcy reorganization, the Boy Scouts began paying out large settlements to 82,000 victims who claim they were sexually abused as boys as members of the organization. This settlement is believed to be the largest ever for a sexual abuse victim.

National participation in the Boy Scouts has plummeted to just over 1 million young people. The organization reached its peak in his 1972 year with nearly 5 million young people participating.
