The changed reality of living under threat in Ukraine

Three and a half years of conflict have radically shifted daily life for Ukrainians. For many, it’s become a relentless cycle of precautions, with sleep often happening underground to stay safe.

This unsettling reality is now accepted as the “new normal” amidst an ongoing war with Russia. Just recently, a significant attack on Kiev resulted in over 30 fatalities, including five children. It has been the most severe assault witnessed since 2024.

Other cities, such as Kramatorsk, Odesa, and Mykolaiv, are not spared from these attacks either. The convergence of pressures from Russia and economic threats from Washington creates a tense atmosphere. Notably, the U.S. administration is hinting at new sanctions, especially if peace remains elusive under President Trump’s leadership.

These sanctions could impose secondary tariffs on countries like India, which notably purchases Russian oil and profits greatly from it, seemingly indifferent to the suffering of Ukrainians caught in the crossfire.

However, many Ukrainians remain skeptical about the effectiveness of such pressure. They’ve experienced a cycle of sanctions that failed to bring about meaningful change before. As one local candidly stated, “Normal civilians suffer every day.”

This week, I’ll be on the ground in Ukraine, reporting on the situation as the President approaches a crucial deadline. The narrative will center on the communities enduring prolonged besiegement.

There’s also an upcoming visit to a Ukrainian drone workshop, a glimpse into how the landscape of modern warfare is evolving and being shaped under these extreme conditions. When asked about whether the U.S. is ready for this new era, the response was immediate: “No.”

Stay tuned for my report during the Elizabeth Vargas Report at 7 p.m. over the coming week.

Additionally, I appreciate the support for my book, “Lessons from the Front.” The renewed interest in my reports from Ukraine has been heartwarming. I originally ventured to Europe on the eve of Russia’s invasion, a moment that transformed my life profoundly. For those interested, my book is available for reservation on platforms like Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
