When it comes to making the right choice about a City Prestige card, you might want to think critically about its so-called “relationship bonuses.” These features often get misunderstood, and it’s crucial to look beyond the marketing hype.
I’ve written about the Citi Prestige Card and its relationship bonus before. Honestly, it feels appropriate to provide a deeper look now, as it’s probably one of the most confusing aspects within Singapore’s credit card market.
On the surface, Citi’s promotions imply you can earn a bonus of up to 30% more miles with each purchase depending on your customer status and how long you’ve been with the bank. However, the reality—well, it’s not quite as generous.
If you’re even slightly considering the Prestige card for what seems like a lucrative bonus, it’s worth getting to grips with how it really works before you make that final call.
Marketing vs. Reality
Citi advertises these relationship bonuses as providing an additional 5% to 30% rewards based on your tenure with the bank and whether you have Citi Gold status.
A common assumption? You’d think your earnings would increase by those percentages.
For instance, a presumed 30% relationship bonus would imply you’d go from a baseline of 1.3 MPD (miles per dollar) to 1.69 MPD for local purchases. Likewise, for overseas spending, it would seem it could increase from 2 MPD to 2.6. But, in truth, that’s misleading.
How the Relationship Bonus Really Works
The relationship bonuses aren’t applied as multipliers—it’s quite different:
- The bonus rate is based on your total eligible spending amount.
- This generates bonus “Thank You Citi points” (not miles).
- These points are then converted to miles at a 2.5:1 ratio.
Are you scratching your head? You’re not alone; it’s a bit much to unpack.
A Real Example
Let’s say you’re a regular customer with four years at the bank. You’d receive a 5% relationship bonus:
- Annual Spending: S$10,000
- Bonus Calculation: S$10,000 x 5% = 500 Thank You points
- Bonus Miles Earned: 500 ÷ 2.5 = 200 miles
- Actual Bonus: 200 miles ÷ S$10,000 = 0.02 MPD
In reality, a “5% bonus” translates to barely anything—essentially, you’d need to spend about S$50,000 a year just to get an additional 1,000 miles from this so-called generous bonus.
And if those expenses are mostly overseas? You’re looking at a mere 1% bump.
Real Numbers
So, what do these relationship bonuses really add up to?
| Citi Prestige Bonus | ||
| Customer Situation | Tenure Period | Bonus MPD |
| Regular Customers | 0-5 years | + 0.02 MPD |
| Regular Customers | 6-10 years | + 0.04 MPD |
| Regular Customers | More than 10 years | + 0.06 MPD |
| Citi Gold | 0-5 years | + 0.06 MPD |
| Citi Gold | 6-10 years | + 0.08 MPD |
| Citi Gold | More than 10 years | + 0.12 MPD |
Your Actual Earning Rate
Factor in these bonuses, and here’s where you really stand financially:
| Citi Prestige Effective Acquisition Rate | |||
| Customer Situation | Tenure Period | Local Spend | Foreign Spend |
| Regular Customers | 0-5 years | 1.32 MPD | 2.02 MPD |
| Regular Customers | 6-10 years | 1.34 MPD | 2.04 MPD |
| Regular Customers | More than 10 years | 1.36 MPD | 2.06 MPD |
| Citi Gold | 0-5 years | 1.36 MPD | 2.06 MPD |
| Citi Gold | 6-10 years | 1.38 MPD | 2.08 MPD |
| Citi Gold | More than 10 years | 1.42 MPD | 2.12 MPD |
For most readers—who are likely regular Citibank customers—your local spending rates typically fall in the 1.32 – 1.36 MPD range, while overseas spending is slightly better, at 2.02 – 2.06 MPD.
Why This Matters
Even at its peak potential, the relationship bonuses simply don’t offer the value that Citi’s marketing suggests. Even the maximum 30% bonus leads to only a meager 0.12 MPD added to your earnings.
To give you some context:
- Entry-level Citi Premiermiles cards earn 2.2 MPD on overseas spending without any holding period requirements—better than what a long-time Citigold Prestige Cardholder would get after 10 years!
- The BOC Elite Miles Card recently improved to offer 1.4/2.8 MPD for local and overseas spending.
- UOB PRVI Miles cardholders get 1.4/2.4 MPD.
- DBS Vantage card offers 1.5/2.2 MPD rates for local and international purchases.
Even with the highest relationship bonuses, the Prestige card’s effective return (1.42 MPD/2.12 MPD) lags behind several other options, including lower-tier cards offered by the same bank.
When Do You Get the Bonus?
Relationship bonuses are credited as a lump sum on the day your annual membership fee is billed, based on eligible expenses from the previous year. You should see this reflected in your monthly statement, alongside any annual renewal fees.
I personally receive a 15% bonus due to being a Citi customer for over ten years, but I don’t have Citi Gold status.
What Spending Counts?
The relationship bonuses apply to transactions that earn regular points, but there are certain exclusions:
- Annual fees and various bank fees
- Invoice payments like utilities
- Education-related expenses
- Financial services payments
- Government-related payments
- Insurance costs
- Digital wallet top-ups
Interestingly, transactions through Citi Payall do contribute to your bonus calculation, similar to redeeming a free hotel stay.
Additional Features of the Citi Prestige Card
This card also offers unlimited lounge access, which was recently reduced to just 12 visits per year, along with a notable increase in the annual fee.
The article outlines all the recent changes, so it’s something to consider seriously before opting for this card—especially if you’re primarily attracted to it for miles or the relationship bonus.
The Citi Prestige card also includes perks like four complimentary nights at selected hotels, golf privileges, and free airport limousine transfers if you meet minimum spending requirements.
New cardholders can earn up to 57,000 miles with a reasonable S$2,000 expenditure in the first two months, which is tied to an annual fee of S$651.82.
This can be viewed as purchasing miles at roughly 1.14 cents each, which has value for future flight redemptions with the bank’s ten airline partners, such as Krisflyer or Qatar Avios.
While the relationship bonus might add a bit of value, it’s more of a minor perk than a decisive factor in choosing this card.
The idea of “up to 30%” should not overly sway your choice. Instead, focus on tangible benefits like the complimentary nights, annual lounge visits, and various transfer options.
When aiming to maximize the miles you earn from everyday spending, you can definitely find more advantageous offers elsewhere.
Understanding this difference is key to deciding if the Citi Prestige card is a worthy addition to your wallet. Recent changes to its perks suggest that long-term value might be questionable, especially once the sign-up bonus is taken into account.
