New NYC Mayor-Elect Discusses Relationship with Trump

New York City’s mayor-elect, Zoran Mamdani, emphasized the importance of his future relationship with President Donald Trump, deeming it “crucial to the success” of the city. He intends to reach out to Trump before officially taking office.

In an interview with NBC New York’s Melissa Russo, Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, talked about his proactive approach to his role as mayor. He stressed the necessity of being “open to working with everyone,” regardless of differing opinions.

“As mayor, I’m responsible for 8.5 million people, so I’m going to actively engage in my role,” Mamdani noted. He believes it’s essential to collaborate with anyone, mentioning that Trump has expressed interest in discussing important issues like lowering living costs and making groceries cheaper. “I’m ready to have that conversation,” he added.

Mamdani also pointed out that previous administrations tended to have such discussions for their own benefit, rather than for the public.

When asked whether he planned to contact Trump, Russo mentioned they would indeed be reaching out to the White House ahead of the inauguration.

“This relationship is critical to the success of the city,” he reiterated.

If given the opportunity to speak with Trump, Mamdani said he would convey that he aims to work for the benefit of all New Yorkers and is eager to explore collaborative possibilities.

In a separate incident, Trump commented on Mamdani’s victory speech during an interview with Fox News, claiming that Mamdani started off on the wrong foot and urged him to “turn up the volume.” Trump described the speech as “very angry” and noted the expected cordiality, given that he has the power to approve many of Mamdani’s initiatives.

Mamdani has previously advocated for city-run grocery stores, opposed police involvement in domestic disputes, and expressed commitment to safeguarding the rights of undocumented immigrants in New York City. He has accused the Trump administration of undermining First Amendment rights in response to ICE actions.

Following Mamdani’s victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, Trump remarked that the nation faced a choice “between communism and common sense,” vowing that under his leadership, America would not become communist.
