Death of 18-Year-Old Passenger on Carnival Horizon Under Investigation
The tragic passing of 18-year-old Anna Kepner aboard the Carnival Horizon has been confirmed by her family. The cruise line stated on Monday that it is fully cooperating with federal investigators following this incident during the ship’s recent return to Miami on Saturday.
According to a spokesperson from the FBI, agents were dispatched to the ship when it docked, and they are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the death. The spokesperson noted, “I can confirm that the FBI responded to the scene. As this is an ongoing matter, no further information is available at this time.”
Details about what may have led to the tragedy remain unclear, and it has not yet been determined whether foul play is suspected.
Kepner’s family shared that she was set to graduate high school in May and had aspirations of joining the military. “When she entered the room, she lit up the room,” they recalled, saying she was often the source of joy and laughter for those around her. “She was the funniest kid in school,” they added.
The family noted her dedication to community service and that she would often volunteer where her grandparents lived, also supporting local businesses in her hometown of Titusville, Florida.
As for her interests, Kepner was actively involved in her school’s varsity cheerleading team, held boating and scuba licenses, and enjoyed spending time near the water. “She was the best child we’ve ever met,” her family expressed. “We will always remember her for who she is.”
Temple Christian School, where Kepner attended, remembered her fondly in a Facebook post as a “bright, kind-hearted young woman whose presence brought warmth and energy to the classroom.”
Former FBI Special Agent Nicole Parker noted that cases involving deaths on cruise ships can be quite complicated from a law enforcement perspective. Generally, if a crime is suspected to have taken place on a cruise ship while it is at sea, the FBI takes jurisdiction
Parker explained that this complexity comes under something known as the Special Maritime Jurisdiction Act, which outlines that if an alleged crime occurs on the high seas, the FBI is responsible. “This requires intricate coordination between various agencies and cruise line officials to navigate the situation effectively,” she added.
The investigation into Kepner’s death continues, as officials work to gather more information regarding the events leading up to the tragedy.
