The Democrats’ New Reality: Ashley Madison and Struggles with Masculinity

The Democratic Party is presenting Kentucky House candidate Zach Dembo as a representation of “normalcy,” yet his remarks bring forth some unusual notions regarding masculinity. Additionally, his email address has been linked to an account on the infamously scandalous site, Ashley Madison.

A post in August by The Washington Sun referred to Dembo as one of the few “normal” candidates within the Democratic realm. The article suggested that other members of the party might benefit from adopting a similar approach to enhance their electoral prospects.

The Sun, citing party insiders, noted that the “average Democrat holds a significantly low reputation among voters,” which makes it easier for candidates who are merely competent to exceed these diminished expectations.

In light of accusations surrounding various Democrat-aligned candidates for the upcoming 2026 midterms—including serious allegations like rape and more personal scandals—the Sun recommended that Democrats should aim for a straightforward, normal appearance, much like Dembo’s.

Dembo himself expressed some concern regarding the strategy in a conversation with the Sun, mused whether aiming to be perceived as normal might indicate deeper issues within the party. He remarked that being normal isn’t something one can simply put on as a political front.

In a rather candid sentiment, he stated, “Hopefully, you’re just a normal dude and don’t have to use it as a political ploy.”

However, in a clip from a 2024 interview on The Good Guy Guide, Dembo compared the contemporary notion of being ‘woke’ to traditional masculinity, suggesting that both concepts can come across as performative rather than genuinely helpful.

Discussing what he calls the Good Guy Complex, which the host defined as a man’s commitment to act for the good of society, Dembo noted the masculine instinct to protect others can sometimes lead to unproductive behaviors. He illustrated this by saying that it reflects the same masculine impulse to be a protector, but in a distorted way. “I’m going to protect women in the sense that I’m stopping these bad things from happening to them,” he explained.

Instead, he suggests a shift in mindset—he learned to “listen a lot more” rather than to act on those protective instincts. He asserted that many leadership issues and instances of partner violence are, to a degree, tied to expectations surrounding masculinity, adding that when these expectations aren’t met, it often leads to overcompensation with aggression.

Dembo admitted that he has faced similar challenges himself, acknowledging this issue is complex and often troubling.

To further emphasize his struggle with not fitting into traditional masculine roles, Dembo shared a personal anecdote about his childhood fascination with butterflies. He mentioned how he collected them and even wore butterfly-themed clothing, which he now recognizes as being perceived as “more associated with girls.”

This interest, he noted, led to some challenges during his school years, prompting him to confront his understanding of masculinity. “I think that obviously led to like a lot of confusion about what it meant to be a boy and a man,” Dembo reflected, recognizing the societal expectations that dictate behavior and leadership roles.

Moreover, The Daily Caller earlier reported that an email attributed to Dembo was found linked to an account on the scandalous site Ashley Madison, raising eyebrows. While a campaign representative claimed that Dembo didn’t use the site and was unaware of any account linked to his email, there has been no follow-up from the Dembo campaign in response to further inquiries from The Daily Caller.
