Nostalgia for Five Alive: The Discontinued Citrus Drink
Five Alive, a citrus beverage cherished by many who grew up in the 1980s, has stirred up nostalgic feelings in recent social media discussions. The drink, which was a favorite among kids, vanished from shelves in the United States when Coca-Cola, its parent company, discontinued it around 1995.
This wave of nostalgia has led many to ask: why did Five Alive disappear? A Reddit user posed the question about a year ago, prompting a flurry of comments reflecting fond memories. One user shared a 1979 advertisement that featured Five Alive’s launch, evoking responses like, “I loved that one!” and “What happened to it?” Another lamented, “I really miss this drink,” while some joked that it could still be consumed today.
“Does anyone remember Five Alive?” another commenter queried, sparking a dialogue filled with warm recollections. Some fondly recalled the frozen concentrates that were available at a lower price. One Redditor vividly described the experience of the juice sliding out of the can, eliciting playful sounds from others that captured the memory perfectly.
The drink was phased out around the mid-1990s as Coca-Cola introduced Fruitopia in 1994, aiming to keep up with changing trends. Despite a hefty marketing push, including a spot on McDonald’s menu and endorsements from cultural figures, Fruitopia ultimately didn’t last either, being discontinued in 2003.
Recently, Coca-Cola announced that Minute Maid would halt all sales of frozen fruit juice concentrate products, citing shifts in consumer tastes. Even though Five Alive is no longer available in the U.S., it has not entirely faded away. The beverage is still being marketed in Canada and is available in Nigeria. Walmart even features it on their website, describing Five Alive as “a nutritious blend of five fruit flavors with a ‘citrus aroma’ that makes you feel alive.”
While many express a longing for Five Alive, it seems that its legacy is still being enjoyed, albeit far from its original roots.
