In 2020, following the death of George Floyd, the Washington Redskins faced increased pressure from woke sponsors, investors, and the general public to remove both their name and logo. Apparently it was racist.
In 2022, the NFL team finally took a knee and rebranded as the Washington Commanders.
However, it appears that Trump's victory may have triggered a reversal.
“The Washington Redskins are going to be the Washington Redskins again,'' Jason Whitlock says excitedly. “Twenty-two days after the election of President Donald Trump, we have officially marked the end of the era of woke sports.”
Apparently, the “Blackfeet chiefs and people of the state of Montana” whom the logo actually celebrates “all support re-establishing the Redskins logo,” Whitlock said, adding that “Commanders… There is even talk that the company might revert to its original logo.” Their names too.
“Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. I'm going to be thankful for the end of this era,” and I'm going to be thankful for the “Endians” who “ended the awakening in sports.”
But when we come to the end of an era, especially the end of an overwhelmingly negative era, it's always good to reflect on what went wrong.
