The first victim of the Brooklyn Bridge accident has been identified as América Yamilet Sánchez.

On Saturday night, a tragic collision involving a ship under the Brooklyn Bridge resulted in the deaths of two people, including a 20-year-old naval cadet from Veracruz, as reported by the state governor.

The victim, América Yamilet Sánchez, who was from Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz, lost her life when the Mexican tall ship Cuauhtémoc crashed into the structure before 8:30 PM, damaging some of its masts.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Veracruz Cadet América Yamilet Sánchez,” Veracruz Gov. Rocío Nahle García posted on social media. “My thoughts, love, and support are with her family.”

In addition, the governor expressed gratitude to the Navy Secretariat, wishing a swift recovery to the injured. “Veracruz stands with you,” she added.
