The trade deadline on February 5th is approaching quickly, placing the Golden State Warriors in a tight spot regarding Jonathan Kuminga. They are actively looking into trade options for the 23-year-old, who has seen just 10 minutes of playing time since early December.
Issues between Kuminga and the Warriors surfaced when it became apparent that his desire to assume a star role didn’t align with what the team envisioned for him. At the start of the season, things appeared promising; Kuminga displayed solid defensive skills, energy, and rebounding in the first five games. However, he struggled with injuries and inconsistency, which ultimately led to his removal from the lineup.
His last game was on December 18th, which, frankly, doesn’t help his trade value much. There were expectations for him to return against Oklahoma City on January 2nd, especially since star players like Curry and Green were unavailable, but complications from back pain raised some eyebrows about his readiness.
The Sacramento Kings have shown interest in acquiring Kuminga, who has a salary of $22.5 million this season and a team option at $24.3 million for the next. Still, the Warriors haven’t made a definitive move yet.
A potential trade could involve sending Kuminga to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Daniel Gafford and perhaps a player like Max Christie or Klay Thompson. Gafford, who contributed to the Mavericks’ success in reaching the Finals in 2024, could strengthen the Warriors’ defense inside as they look to deepen their wing positions.
There’s also the idea of trading Kuminga for Michael Porter Jr. from the Brooklyn Nets, but that might require additional teams to get involved.
This season, the Warriors have been underwhelming, with a record of 20-18, and head coach Steve Kerr candidly referred to them as a “dynasty in decline.” They seem to struggle particularly against emerging teams like Oklahoma City and San Antonio.
While Kerr’s comments garnered criticism for their negativity, he also mentioned that there’s still a chance to be competitive, saying, “There’s no reason why we can’t give ourselves a chance.” The Warriors have to figure out a way to fortify their lineup, especially if they manage to trade Kuminga effectively.
Curry continues to perform well, averaging 28.8 points, and Butler is contributing with his three-point shooting. Kerr noted that while Green may lack some of his former speed, he compensates with strategic play, claiming he remains “one of the greatest defenders in the league.”
Currently, the Warriors seem to be inching toward competitiveness, recently winning seven out of their last ten games. With Kuminga expressing a desire for a more significant role and a likely parting of ways, addressing gaps in the lineup could be crucial for their future success.
The Warriors have a complex history. After missing the playoffs in 2020 and 2021, they bounced back with a championship in 2022. However, they have been unable to progress past the second round of the playoffs over the last three seasons.
It’s uncertain if Golden State can dig deep for greatness once more before their dynasty truly crumbles. What they decide to do with Kuminga could significantly influence their trajectory.
