This superstitious ritual began in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. This is where Punxsutawney got his Phil name and his start as a rodent meteorologist.
Every year on February 2nd, thousands of spectators Go to a small town and gather at Gobbler’s Knob Park to watch Punxsutawney Phil’s predictions live.

Legend has it that Punxsutawney Phil predicted that if he saw his own shadow at dawn and ran away, there would be six more weeks of cold winter.
He predicted that spring would come early if there were no shadows.
And in 2024, Punxsutawney Phil announced that he couldn’t see his shadow, making an unusual prediction for early spring. The announcement was met with cheers and boos from the thousands of people gathered in Pennsylvania.

The event has become a popular event both in Pennsylvania and in popular culture.
In 1993, Bill Murray’s comedy film Groundhog Day, about a weather forecaster reporting on events in Punxsutawney, was released. Murray’s character is stuck in a time loop, reliving February 2nd over and over again.
The predictions for the past few years have been pretty even, with 2018 showing a groundhog’s shadow, indicating another six weeks of winter, and 2019 seeing no shadow, meaning an early spring.

I didn’t see my shadow in 2020, but I saw it again in both 2021 and 2022.
Last year, the groundhog saw his shadow at 7:25 a.m.
The annual weather ceremony is hosted by the Groundhog Club Inner Circle, a group of local dignitaries who care for Punxsutawney Phil and help arrange special festivities.
Punxsutawney Phil’s weather forecast is what people flock to see, but the groundhog’s weather forecast was made at a critical moment by a group at Gobbler’s Knob, just outside Punxsutawney, just 105 miles from Pittsburgh. It is done in advance.
Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are one of the “most widely distributed mammals” in the Keystone State.
According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s website, club members work “to preserve and perpetuate the legend of Punxsutawney Phil, the great groundhog who predicted the weather.”
Although this quirky day originated in the late 19th century, historians believe that Groundhog Day derives from Candlemas, a Christian holiday that dates back to the 4th century.

Across Europe, Candlemas observers took candles to local churches for winter blessings.
Extant records show that the idea of animals predicting the weather was introduced during the Candlemas festival in Germany. These animals include badgers, hedgehogs, bears, foxes, and more.
The Dutch group moved to Pennsylvania We adopted the lore of the badger and the hedgehog to predict the weather. Over time, the legend seems to have changed to include groundhogs, as Pennsylvania has a limited badger population and lacks native hedgehogs.

The diary kept by James Morris, a storekeeper in Morgantown, West Virginia, is one of the earliest records. Groundhog weather forecaster. His handwritten notes are kept at the Berks County Historical Society in Reading, Pennsylvania and are dated February 4, 1841.
The diary entry says, “Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas Day.According to the Germans, on this day a groundhog emerges from its winter hive, sees its own shadow, and returns again for six weeks. Apparently it’s his day to take a nap. But even if it’s cloudy that day, the weather is supposed to be calm, so he stays outside.”

It’s Groundhog Day, Fun annual events in America, National Weather Service State University meteorologists recommend getting weather forecasts from trained experts. In fact, the probability of Phil’s predictions coming true is quite low. According to the Stormfax Almanac, Groundhog’s predictions are accurate only 39% of the time.
