Concerns Over Censorship and Corporate Ratings
MRC’s Free Speech America has uncovered some troubling findings on a radical anti-free speech group’s website. They identified that some of the most aggressive censors are highly recognized by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), which champions corporate censorship alongside LGBTQ values. Major tech firms and financial institutions, like Google, Apple, and Amazon, received top ratings from HRC’s Corporate Equality Index. In contrast, Elon Musk’s X received a notably low score in 2025.
The HRC’s scrutiny of Musk began after he acquired Twitter in October 2022, marking a shift in speech policies that they deemed problematic. X faced backlash for reducing content moderation since February 2023 and for allowing the posting of a documentary titled “Detrans: The Dangers of Gender-Affirming Care.” According to HRC, the Corporate Equality Index punishes X with a negative score due to its perceived lack of responsibility in citizenship.
Rick Grenell, former acting national intelligence director under Trump, criticized the HRC for facilitating censorship through its corporate ratings system. He remarked that companies often pay for better ratings and accused the HRC of racial bias, which led him to file a lawsuit against them. He also suggested that the IRS should reconsider the HRC’s tax-exempt status because of its partisan actions.
Many firms with perfect scores are recognized as platinum, gold, or silver Corporate Partners by the HRC. The organization evaluates these companies based on their adherence to various criteria, including employment practices and charitable contributions. MRC’s Free Speech America questioned whether the HRC holds major tech companies accountable for their content moderation. Despite reaching out to several leading firms, including Alphabet and PayPal, responses were generally absent, although Bank of America did address inquiries regarding HRC’s influence on their practices, stating they follow government regulations without political bias.
Beyond the previously mentioned firms, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has also received a perfect rating. Recently, Zuckerberg announced a policy shift aimed at easing content moderation, coinciding with the release of HRC’s 2025 Corporate Equality Index. This change was met with criticism from the HRC, who expressed their concerns about freedom of speech online.
