Ernie Johnson to Depart “Inside the NBA”

Ernie Johnson’s journey as the host of the beloved “Inside the NBA” is drawing to a close. Now, the focus shifts to the rest of the cast and what his exit signifies for the show’s future.

Johnson, who is 70, announced on Wednesday that he will be leaving the program at the end of the current season, bringing an end to 37 years of contributions since he joined in 1990. His departure leaves a noticeable gap among the long-standing panel members of the show, which has aired on TNT and ESPN. It’s uncertain how the program will evolve going forward, but one thing seems certain: at least Charles Barkley, another prominent figure, will also be leaving with Johnson.

Barkley had previously declared that the 2024-25 season would be his last, although he has continued to participate in the show since its transition to ESPN last year.

In a discussion on The Ringer’s “The Bill Simmons Podcast” late last summer, Barkley expressed that he and Johnson would essentially be a “package deal.”

Barkley remarked, “Me and Ernie are a package deal. So right now, unless Ernie changes his mind, next year is my last year, 100 percent.”

He reminisced about TNT wanting him to stay for an additional two years before the network lost NBA broadcasting rights, noting that ESPN has continued to feature him, Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith together for the last two seasons.

Barkley emphasized that his decision to remain was largely about supporting the crew behind the scenes. “The only reason I stayed is so everybody could keep their job behind the scenes,” he said.

On Wednesday night, Barkley became emotional while addressing Johnson, describing him as the “unquestionable leader” of their panel and acknowledging how challenging the day was, despite being expected.

Additionally, Barkley participated in a podcast episode of “Post Moves with Candace Parker & Aliyah Boston” released shortly before Johnson revealed his plan to leave the show.

He stated, “It’s been an honor to work with Ernie, Kenny, and Shaq. We’ve got the best crew in the business. We’re all waiting on Ernie to make a decision — he’s the godfather. I’ll have nothing but love and admiration and respect for that guy.”

As for the future of “Inside the NBA,” it’s hard to say what lies ahead once this season concludes. What is certain, however, is that the show will continue to air on Wednesdays and proceed through the playoff season.
