The Jets' obvious lack of strength at wide receiver is becoming increasingly worrying.

The Jets are still searching for a reliable No. 2 receiver to complement Garrett Wilson as they head into week three against the Buccaneers.

So far, the team has managed just five receptions during their disappointing 0-2 start.

Veteran Josh Reynolds will miss another game, which creates an opportunity for someone to step up and catch passes from quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

“We beat Josh, so we probably have to play a little more to help,” said Wilson’s fellow Georgia alum, Arianne Smith.

“We know we need to step up. Garrett is a fantastic player, but he can’t do it all alone. We have to take some of the pressure off him and be effective, whether that’s blocking for the run or contributing in the pass game.”

Smith, who grew up just outside Tampa, has had limited success so far, with only one catch for 8 yards on two targets across his first two games. He did attempt a reverse play that resulted in a 10-yard loss in the last game against the Bills, yet he remained positive about being called into action.

Tyler Johnson, who signed a one-year deal worth $1.7 million after two seasons with the Rams, has also struggled to make an impact, managing just two receptions from three targets in his first two games with the Jets.

“Whenever we get our shot, we need to make the most of it,” Johnson noted. “We’ve been working on our game since training camp, and it’s time for that to show on the field.”

He expressed optimism about the upcoming matchup.

Lazard, who was inactive last week due to a prior injury, was suited up but had no targets while playing 22 snaps—mostly on running plays—against the Bills.

“We need to do what we can to be effective in the run game and, of course, open up the passing game,” Lazard remarked. “Football can be unpredictable; plays can shift in an instant, but we have to be ready to step in when required.”

He admitted that, despite the differences in their styles, there’s not much separating Taylor and injured starter Justin Fields, who is out with a concussion.

Johnson echoed this sentiment, saying, “There’s not a huge difference between the two.”

“Certainly, having Tyrod around last year gives a bit more comfort,” Lazard added. “It’s motivating to see how dedicated everyone in the locker room is to their preparation each week.”

Wilson, who recently signed a $130 million contract extension, has recorded 11 receptions for 145 yards so far—significantly more than the rest of the receivers combined.
