The 2026 American Dream: Personal Reflections

The Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream showcases U.S. citizens sharing what the 2026 American Dream signifies for them, running until July 4th. Among those is Maria Contreras-Sweet, the former Commissioner of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Maria reflects on her childhood, particularly her remarkable grandmother, Emelia. She embodied the spirit of “yes,” and her belief system has always inspired Maria. She feels a strong responsibility to uplift others, driven by the notion that helping those around her will eventually circle back to personal fulfillment.

Maria recalls her early days in the U.S., arriving at the tender age of five without knowing a word of English. Growing up, she often felt frustrated, realizing there weren’t many successful young Latina girls from Mexico to look up to. This prompted her to establish an organization named HOPE—Hispanas Organized for Political Equality—which has since grown to support women in leadership across the nation.

Her journey led her to work for her local state senator, ultimately landing a position at a large corporation in government affairs. Eventually, she became the California Secretary of Education and later founded a bank. A career highlight was being invited by President Obama to serve in his cabinet as head of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

“The focus on small businesses is crucial,” she explains. They play a significant role in driving our economy forward. By starting new enterprises, we can expand the middle class, which deepens democracy. It’s all about nurturing future decision-makers and leaders within communities.

Looking back, Maria reflects on her grandmother’s teachings. As a migrant worker, Emelia always emphasized the value of hard work and lifting others. She once dreamt that Maria would one day work in an office, and against all odds, that dream became a reality—becoming a secretary turned cabinet Secretary became part of Maria’s life story. That, to her, epitomizes the American dream.

This video project represents authentic stories that highlight the journey toward opportunity, part of the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream’s celebration for America’s 250th anniversary. This Washington, DC cultural institution showcases interactive exhibits and narratives about achieving what many consider the American dream.
