Star Players and Controversial Calls
Star players often seem to draw all the attention, yet that wasn’t the case for Kate Clark on Saturday during a challenging match against the defending champions, the New York Liberty. As the game heated up, Clark was subject to a hard block from Natasha Cloud, which the referees did not penalize. This decision sparked outrage among the over 18,000 fans supporting the Fever.
Ultimately, Fever lost the match 90-88.
Post-game, Fever’s head coach, Stephanie White, did not hold back in criticizing the officiating. “I believed she was fouled,” White told reporters. “It’s really concerning what’s been happening lately—our free throw discrepancy is a staggering minus 31. We might get more attempts if we were just throwing up threes, but that’s not our style.”
Feeling frustrated by the no-call, Clark was asked about the referee’s decision, to which she simply replied, “I don’t know,” adding that she hadn’t reviewed the game tape yet.
White’s comments reflected a stronger sense of frustration. “The disrespect for our team has been remarkable,” she stated. “It’s unfortunate that this doesn’t seem to apply equally to both sides.”
Clark managed to score 18 points but struggled with her shooting, hitting only six of her 18 attempts. The difference in free throw opportunities was stark, as Liberty shot 32 times from the line, while the Fever only got 15 chances.
In closing, White expressed disappointment over the inconsistency in officiating within the WNBA. “There’s a system for expressing our concerns, but I honestly don’t know how effective it is. We’re not asking for change, just a level of consistency,” she remarked.
