Yankees Set to Face Red Sox This Weekend
The Yankees are gearing up to play the Red Sox for the first time this June, marking the fifth encounter in six years. This rivalry match-up is set to kick off with three games in the Bronx starting Friday, presenting the first-place Yankees with a chance to widen their lead in the AL East.
The struggling Red Sox (30-34) find themselves trailing the Yankees by 9.5 games, and they’ll be missing key player Alex Bregman due to an injury. “Their start has been tough, for sure, but many of those games were close,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone remarked after his team triumphed over the Guardians 4-0 in Thursday’s finale. “We noticed they are a talented team during spring training and early on.”
Boone expressed respect for the upcoming challenge, noting, “It seems like a hungry club is heading our way. Their start may not be ideal, but they remain dangerous.” The Red Sox will feature former All-Stars Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet as pitchers for the first two games, while Yankees veterans like Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt are eager to dive into this storied rivalry.
Bellinger, reflecting on the matchup, said, “I was surprised it was already June; it feels like we’ve been waiting. I remember the ’04 Red Sox and the intense rivalries from the late ’90s and early 2000s. The atmosphere should be electric.”
Goldschmidt shared similar sentiments, comparing the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry to his own intense competition with the Cubs during his time in St. Louis. “We all recognize the history here. Games like this are exciting for the fans when both teams are competitive. I can see why the Mets and Red Sox matchups are highlighted,” he explained.
Despite a rough outing against the Dodgers last week, Yankees pitcher Will Warren is ready for his moments on the mound. “I’m looking forward to making my first career start against the Red Sox. I know how meaningful this rivalry is to so many, and that’s what makes it exciting,” he noted.
Warren added, “Playing at home with our supportive fans always lights a fire under us. But against the Red Sox? I know they’ll be bringing it.”
